Catholic Homeschooling
Saint Joseph parish is blessed to be home to the largest concentration of homeschooling families of any parish in Lancaster County. Most members of the Lancaster Latin Mass community choose to homeschool their children and are members of the Lancaster Catholic Home Educators Association (pronounced “LAY-CH”), a co-op that provides encouragement and activities to support a variety of Catholic homeschool programs. LACHE has the permission of the Diocese of Harrisburg to use the name “Catholic”.
Homeschooling is growing among Catholics in the U.S. and is responsible for an increasing number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This type of education is in full accord with the Code of Canon Law that states,
” Parents are obliged and enjoy the right to educate their offspring; Catholic parents also have the duty and the right to select those means and institutions through which they can provide more suitably for the Catholic education of the children according to local circumstances” (CIC 793 §1).”
Many also hold membership in the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), a nonprofit Christian advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children.
While there are many exceptional curriculums to choose from, the majority use the Mother of Divine Grace Homeschooling Curriculum or MODG for short (rhymes with Hodge). Other curriculums include:
Many of our families supplement their homeschool with the following local resources:
- The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies (Latin and Greek language school)
- The Lancaster Center for the Performing Arts (Choir, Orchestra, Theatre and Visual Arts)
- Bethany-Grace Co-Op primarily for homeschoolers in Northern Lancaster and Berks County
For middle and high-school age children other options include:
- St. Gregory’s Academy in Elmhurst, PA near Scranton
- St. Louis De Montfort Academy in Herndon, PA north of Harrisburg
- Saint Martin’s Academy, Fort Scott, KS south of Kansas City.
